Many marriages fail because of poor communication. This is because many people just get married without acquiring the basic skills of interpersonal communication.

In poor communication, we find that one thing leads to another and this continues until it gets worse. If the wife shouts at her husband instead of maintaining her calm when she's speaking on an issue that means a lot to her, what can she expect but to get the same from her husband. He may shout back at her or he may ignore her all together. If he shouts back at her, things can get worse. If he ignores her, it can also get worse, in that she can feel rejected or he can feel hurt and may react negatively to her subsequently.

In successful marriages, husbands and wives respect each other's opinions and they also respect each other. This is reflected in the way they communicate with each other.

The first year my husband and I were dating, I sent him a gorilla in a tutu with a bunch of colorful ballons for his birthday and got a friend to take pictures. We still laugh about it after almost 20 years

Life is so much stressful these days. I just heard that a friend of mine lost her husband. Her husband had a stroke. He was very young and it was all so very unexpected.

You are right. We should not take our good health for granted. But it sure helps to live a calmer life.
