The Law... or grace

This is a different kind of post for me, musing about something spiritual. Not to say I never think about spiritual things, just that I'm the "Marriage & Relationship" blogger, not the "Spiritual" blogger, so I try to keep my posts on topic.

But I had an interesting talk with a friend last night. She was raised in one of the more "Keep the rules, do your good works," faiths. She wandered somewhat from the rules as an adult, but still believed in the faith of her family. She recently had a reawakening and is returning to the rules.

I'm all for someone returning to a saving faith (and if you're not sure what that is, I'll be glad to talk to you - a few people have said they can't post comments anymore and I'm not sure how to solve that. I'll try to get it back soon.) But as I listened to Marigold (not her real name, by the way), I kept asking but what about grace?

She mentioned keeping the Sabbath holy - meaning what day is the right day to observe. To me, keeping the Sabbath holy is being sure to set aside one day (not necessarily Saturday or Sunday as a day of rest and spiritual renewal. Because my husband is a peace officer, he has to work on the Sabbath - no matter what day it is. I've already said he works holidays. So, in a grace-based faith, as long as he takes one of his days off and sets it aside for rest and renewal, I think he's keeping the Sabbath. Marigold disagrees.

I applaud her intent to honor God and to want to live a life pleasing YHWH. But how pleasing is it, if we're so wrapped up in what we can or can't do on what day of the week that we forget the whole purpose of the Sabbath? Seems like that's honoring the wishes of someone else. Someone who's an enemy of our souls.

Just thinking out loud here...
