Catching the Last of Summer

Can you believe that it is coming upon us so quickly? Fall will arrive right on schedule - September 23rd - and that means only a few weeks until summer ebbs away like a lingering sunlight on the horizon. Seasons are a beautiful part of God's plan, aren't they? They gently remind us that life continually changes whether we are ready or not.

Fall brings with it so many activities! New classes, new teachers, new friends! Our family calendar fills quickly with sporting events, open house, last minute supply shopping, bonfires, parties, and plays.

Before the rat race begins, why not indulge you and your children in some energy-building last minute fun?

* Put together a casual picnic. Bread, peanut butter and apples, plus a thermos of milk or water are all you need. Find a beautiful spot in your yard or a nearby park and share the food together!

* Go to the library and pick out some fun picture books to read together, even if your child is older. Don't forget a few of the childhood classics. It can be silly fun for all.

* Plan a back-to-school party for the first day of school. After school is out, the kids meet at your house for cake and fun! Sing "Happy Back to School" instead of "Happy Birthday" and play some games. Take a lot of pictures and send home with everyone.

* Sleep outside under the stars. Or have Dad pull this one off if it doesn't sound too fun for you! Kids love it and will feel special for a long, long time.

* Plan a treasure hunt for the yard or neighborhood. Make a list of things they need to find and the team that collects everything first wins. Treasure hunt items can be things like wildflowers, worms, ladybugs, rocks - anything to get your children to focus in on nature and its beauty.

* Hug and kiss a lot!! And, thank God for His perfect beauty and seasons.
