I haven't been posting lately...too crazy-busy this summer. Sorry about that! To my few and faithful readers, let me give you an idea what I've been reading.
In the chick lit category, we have Austenland by Shannon Hale (of Princess Academy fame, for you parents of young girls). I really wanted to love it, and it was good, but it wasn't great. It's a cute story, told in first-person, about a young woman who goes to live in "Austenland" in England, as if she were a participant in Jane Austen's time. Fun, lighthearted read.
Another chick lit I read is of the Christian variety: Splitting Harriet by acclaimed author Tamera Leigh. I enjoyed this one; it had depth, it had heart, it had a lot to say about the church. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I read a mom-lit book which has also been seen at Target in the Bookmarked section as well as advertised in national magazines: Carpool Diem by writer and first-time novelist Nancy Star. Again, one I wanted to love, but didn't. I thought it was a fabulous premise, but some of the plot was a bit too much, and of course the soccer mom stuff was greatly exaggerated (I hope!) for effect, which was actually fun. My favorite were the coach's parent letters. They were great! Overall, this is a good summer read for moms.
I was realizing how many books I have in my home that are halfway finished! One of those is Stephen King's literary, non-horror Lisey's Story. I have enjoyed it a lot, but had to stop for a bit and take a bit of a mental break because it is very, very intense.
So I picked up a Steeple Hill book, Mother of Prevention which has been in Mt. TBR for a year, and again, one I didn't love. I'd say it's mom-lit as well.
I think I'm either becoming more jaded, or have gotten some of that summer ennui. What do you think? :-)
